Security and your network
Security - it's a simple word. Putting
it in place on your computers and network is yet
another story. Threats can come from
anywhere these days. Astonishingly, most
threats to a company's data or network comes
from within the company itself.
Any company must take action to prevent
unauthorized access to it's data, or risk the
consequences.
According to a 1999 survey of IT
professionals by Information
Security Magazine, 52% had suffered some
form of attack, intrusion, or leakage of
information in the previous year.
The first step in taking action to protect
your network and computing resources is to
create a security policy. It should define
acceptable usage parameters, standards, and what
actions to take.
Most companies have (or should) implemented
technologies such as firewalls, virus scanners,
Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), and programs
to track network resource usage. However,
most of these technologies protect against only
the external attacks (read Internet). Some
companies are now protecting their resources
from their internal users using firewalls and
other technologies.
